Brass Act

Brass Act is a professional Brass Quintet that has been performing publicly since 1998. The group consists of five musicians with lengthy and musically diverse backgrounds. The ensemble is dedicated to the performance and education of Brass Ensemble music.

Julie Shrom - French Horn - ensemble manager

Ms. Shrom received a four year music scholarship and graduated with a BA from the University of Georgia, Athens. Since college she has performed in numerous settings for Church, community theatre productions and touring opera companies. Her past experience includes performing with the Greensboro Civic Orchestra, the Greensboro College Opera Company, and the Charlotte Philharmonic. Shrom has specialized in performing orchestral music, ceremonial music and providing music for receptions and business events. She has performed professionally for Brass Act Brass Quintet since it began in 1998. She is in her 21st year as a horn player with the Charlotte Civic Orchestra (formerly the Charlotte Repertory Orchestra) and serves as Brass Act business manager.

Jon Thornton - Trumpet -music director

Mr. Thornton attended the University of Miami (Fla), the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) and Berklee College of Music (Boston) and Winthrop University. He studied Trumpet under Don Eisaman (NBC Staff Orchestra), Jerry Coker (UT), and Dr. Ian Peirson (WU). Thornton?s varied career has included multiple tours and performances with artists such as the Woody Herman Orchestra, Natalie Cole, the Salisbury Symphony and many others. He has also served four years in the NC Artist in Residence program in two community colleges. Thornton is a full time performing and recording artist, producer and teacher. He is also a founding member of Brass Act.

Ken Davis - Trombone

Mr. Davis graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. He has been involved in Music Education his entire career. As Assistant Band Director he has taught at South Mecklenburg High School. As full Director of Bands he has taught at Quail Hollow Middle School, North Mecklenburg High School, Davidson IB Middle School and since 1996 has been tenured at Mooresville High School. Davis? trombone performing experience includes the Charlotte Repertory Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic and various Big Band, Jazz and Theatre productions. He also teaches privately.

David Mills - Tuba

Mr. Mills is in his 29th year as Principal Tubist with the Charlotte Symphony. He is an honors graduate of the University of Miami . His graduate studies were at Manhattan School of Music and the Institute of Advanced Musical Study, Montreux, Switzerland. He also attended the Aspen Music Festival. His teachers include Constance Weldon, Paul Krzywicki, Abe Torchinsky, Toby Hanks, Mel Culbertson, Robert Tucci, Jean Douay and brass quintet with Philip Jones and Denis Wick. Mills has also conducted the North Carolina Dance Theater, Charlotte Youth Symphony, Charlotte Youth Wind Ensemble, and the CPCC Community Band. He has taught at NC School of the Arts and Winthrop University.
