A Sign of the Times

A.S.O.T.T. is a swinging big band (a la Count Basie & Duke Ellington) playing original compositions, Jazz and R&B standards. Within the big band there are several smaller ensembles.

A.S.O.T.T. explores many musical genres from Jamaican Raggae to Jamaican (NY) funk: from swinging Basie to new-jack swing; from Earth-Wind and Fire and James Brown to New Orleans Cajun and zydeco!

Director, trombonist Tyrone Jefferson, is the former music director for the Godfather of Soul, James Brown and has performed and/or recorded with Slide Hampton, Maceo Parker, Regina Carter, Donald Harrison, Carla Cook, and The Manhattans. Tyrone formed the "A Sign of the Times Big Band" in 1999.

The full band is comprised of nineteen of the area's best musicians. The group has performed throughout the Carolinas, Georgia and Maryland for such clients as Winston Salem State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical; North Carolina State University, The United Negro College Fund, Congressmen Mel Watt (NC) and Jim Clyburn (SC), United Way of the Carolinas Charlotte The Latin American Women's Association just to name a few. 'They are known for excellence in musicianship, classy presentations and signature arrangements of anything from traditional jazz and bebop to classic R&B and Salsa music.

The ASOTT Big Band

This funky big band has performed throughout the Carolinas for numerous clients including, The North Carolina Guardsmen, Afro American Cultural Center and The Charlotte Swing Dance Society, just to name a few. The band has received rave reviews and has been the band of Choice for "The Best of Charlotte" four years in a row. This year at the request of "The Best of Charlotte" planning committee, A Sign Of The Times added some Country and Western classics to their existing collection, and once again brought down the house! Ray Charles and Charlie Pride would have been proud.

The ASOTT R&B Band

This band brings down the house with the funky sounds of the 60's, and 70's & 80's. Whether it is the classic sounds of Earth, Wind and Fire, Ohio Players, James Brown or many other funky old school groups, this band will keep the party jumping. When it is time to slow it down, they transform the dance floor into a haven for love with the smooth sounds of The Queen of Soul; Aretha Franklin or the jazzy sounds of Ms. Etta James. This band keeps the crowd on its feet. This band has performed for The North Carolina Guardsmen, and the Canzater Golf Classic. It has been the headlining band in Beaufort, South Carolina's Annual Gullah Festival for the past two years. The R&B band has been the band of choice over the past 3 years for the 100 Black Men Gala and Winston Salem State's CIAA after party.

The ASOTT Latin Ensemble

This high-energy Latin band made its inaugural performance at the 2003 Latin Day Festival in Charlotte, NC with a repeat performance in 2004. In less than one year the band has performed for Latin festivals in Burlington, Gastonia, and in Midland, NC. The band has also performed for the Latin Women's Association Annual Gala two consecutive years. During his last visit to Charlotte, internationally acclaimed singer Tito Nieves was so impressed with the group that he has made a commitment to the North Carolina Blumenthal Performance Arts Center to have the "A Sign Of The Times" Latin Ensemble perform as his band when he returns to Charlotte.
